Graduate School

Just a note that I have been accepted to the University of Colorado, Denver Master's of Sociology program. I am starting some work from a grant related to domestic violence over this summer. Course work begins in the fall. The program is 2 years long with an option for a Ph.D. in "Health and Behavioral Science" or "Public Policy" at completion. I am opting to continue on a Ph.D. track, just not sure which one at this point. Wish me luck and send Top Ramen!

Due Date

We went to the doctor yesterday. We are at 10 weeks and 5 days. The babies official due date is December 31st, 2008. Since Sommer has to have a C-Section, we have gone ahead and scheduled it. It will occur December 22nd, 2008 (early because they don't want Sommer to go into labour first). So we will be having a Christmas baby. I invite you all to be here for the big event!! I've got to run out now and get a new stocking!!

Well, it took my expert hunting and tracking skills to find Sommer, but I finally did - and after 14 months there's a new Luther Baby on the way! We have a doctor's appointment June 9th to get delivery date details and the such, so I will have a new update then. As of now mom is feeling "ok". She can't decide if she's going to have the same extreme morning sickness or not that she had last time. I, needless to say, am excited to be getting my BLOG back on!!!!!

Labor: Started 6pm on the dot March 08. 16 hours of labor!
Born: March 09, 2007 - 10:20am, c-section (mom's fine), 6lb 10.4oz, 20 inches.
St. Joseph's Hospital, Denver CO.

I have video of EVERYTHING! I'll upload when I get out of the hospital.

He has a TON of brown hair!!

We are in room 206 for calls and things. Go ahead and ring us up if youre in the mood. Sommer is feeling great!

We are staying in the hospital until Tuesday morning just to keep an eye on Sommer's blood pressure.

While Luther Baby would love to respond to this question himself, certain contractual obligations (through his parent company Disney) forbid him to actually speak publicly until he is born. However, I did receive an inter-office memo asking me to address your question.

Children’s toy selection, and especially those for newborns, takes a combination of care and intuition. While one gift may seem perfect for one twin, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is perfect for the other. BUT if there is one thing that ANY kid loves, it’s puppies! Below is a picture of two adorable pit bulls sleeping with a new born baby. These pit bulls can be found at Valley of the Sun Dog Rescue in Mesas, AZ. Why don’t you call Kathy there at 480-228-0126 and tell her what a great idea it is to leave those dogs to watch over baby and order two for the twins!

Since you know you're having two twin boys, it’s never too early to invest in some tools. Studies show (none of which I've actually conducted) that children that are given toys that let them build and create, rather than ones that just flash and sing, develop more sophisticated and creative mental processes than those that don't have such toys. Boys that are given blocks and log cabins are 126% better than those with out. To make really smart kids, the data is very clear - rather than just giving them blocks and log cabin sets to start off with, encourage your nephews to carve their own with this fine Christmas dandy:

Some of us were not (Sommer), so it should come as no surprise to anyone that the baby's name is Henry Oliver Luther. Henry and I are patiently awaiting his departure from what we call "the vessel", so that we may go to Arizona and enjoy what may be left of baseball's spring training. I slipped Henry some tunneling tools baked in a cake last time I visited him and it is our hope that he'll be out by March 1 as to not miss a minute of baseball action. We'll keep you posted.

Luther Baby Says Ritter

In a recent interview, Luther Baby was quoted to say he “unequivocally” supports Bill Ritter in the 2006 race for Colorado governor. Of his reasons for Ritter support, Luther Baby sights most importantly Ritter’s tough stance on diaper rash and securing the diaper border. In a 2002 statement to the Denver Post, Ritter said “leakage of the diaper border is the most important issue of the new millennium. It’s a two way street, bad poo gets in, bad poo gets out,” to which Luther Baby has replied “I can respect that.”

Don’t worry my friend! There’s a 2001 documentary you should watch about Jake Gyllenhaal (one of the stars of Brokeback Mountain). It’s called Bubble Boy. It’s about Jake's life as a young man and his “Life Journey” living with an immune disorder. After you watch the documentary you should have some ideas of what to expect for your son. Official Luther Baby Sex/Size Pool

This Friday (Oct. 20th) is the day we find out the Luther baby's sex. Are you ready to place your bets? $5 per pick to choose the sex. Limit one bet per better. There is also a bet on the size of the Luther Baby. The national average for a 20 week old fetus is 6.46 inches from the top of the head to the base of the butt. The entire fetal length average for a 20 week old fetus is 10.08 inches. For our friends overseas, use this link to convert inches to centimeters. We are only betting on the "Crown to Base" measurements found in this chart.

Here is some help for you mathematicians: At 8 weeks the Luther baby was measured at 1.85cm. The average for 8 weeks is 1.6cm.

The Rules:
There is a $5 per quess charge for the size guesses. All money collected is going towards the purchase of a video camera that we will be using for the recording and the posting the video of the actual ultra sound as well as future postings that will include Luther family video.
Guesses should be posted as a reply to this posting. You can have multiple guesses but each guess must be an individual posting, no posting ranges all at once! Guesses will be recorded on a first come first serve basis based on the time recorded by this blog. You need to pay attention to everyone elses guesses so that you dont choose one already taken. Guesses should reflect two (2) decimal points, for example 6.48 and 6.49 are separate guesses. A guess of 6.8 will be recorded as 6.80.

The Grand Prize:
The winner of the pool is that individual that guesses the sex AND size correctly or gets the closest. The winner of the contest will be told the name(s) of the baby on Oct. 20th. The winner's name will be announced on Oct. 20th via the blog. Everyone else will have to wait until Oct. 27th to find out the name(s) Travis and Sommer have choosen. However, the person awarded the information can make whatever arrangements they want to on the blog to sell or barter the name information. They can also leave hints on the blog if they choose to. Basically, the winner of the contest can do whatever they want to do for seven days to torture everyone else, until their seven days runs out - then we will announce the name(s) officially.

There is a question that is continuing to become more urgent. This pertains to the child... it seems to me there is overwhelming empirical evidence suggesting an influence of a child's name and their particular fates or eventual personality characteristics.

There may be a common characteristic among all of the Denise's, or a Brenda's. I once knew a Lucy who was so exquisitely beautiful that forever I will have an irrational fondness for any girl with that name. Now we all know there is no real connection between all of the Lucys and natural, youthful beauty - but could all of the Ebenezers truly be scrooges?

You are dead on, and I'm glad someone has raised this question. There are INDEED names that carry with them punishments and negative consequences. Anyone who has ever seen The Breakfast Club knows that the Character "Bender," though fictional, lays some powerful truths on all of us. Listen here...

Here's something interesting about names, and something I've been following closely - isn't it a little weird that Jerry Seinfeld "just happened" to land the leading role in a TV show called Seinfeld? AND - his friend Drew Carey, with seemingly NO audition (ya, they did audition a couple guys, but who were they kidding) got the leading role in a TV show called The Drew Carey Show? Naturally this would lead one to believe that names like Seinfeld and Carey are names you can associate with success and a hard, determined work ethic. But my gut tells me this was a set-up all along and that somebody close to the actors was slipping a few bucks to the executive producers to get their clients those roles.

BUT, there are some names that are SOOO closely associated with success that they definitely should get ample consideration. Bush, is a great example. There are a ton of successful and loved Bush's. Let's see.....there's the Bush's that make those baked beans and have that silly dog that's always saying he's gonna sell the family recipe. What a NUT!!!! Wouldn't you want someone that silly in your family?? And then there's Adolphus Busch who made Budwiser beer. Another Nut!! What a great guy!!! A lot of people don't know this, but Adolphus was also in the Baseball Stadium building business and built with his bare hands (as I understand it), Busch Stadium, where the St. Louis Cardinals play. Let's see....there's gotta be some other good Bush's out there....hmmmm....actually no. I guess that's it. But as you can see - the name Bush at least has some potential, if only limited.

One thing I'm sure of though is that you DON'T want a name that starts with P! Like P P Head or P P Pants or anything along those lines. I was walking by this daycare playground on my way to Bingo and I heard all these kids "Hey, P P Pants" and "What's up P P Head," and I was like "Dang, I thought the in names were like Kaden and Cadence and stuff." Well, I guess it goes to show, the times they are a changin'. But those kids are gonna be MESSED UP, and I don't want to have to be the doctor that fixes them. No way.

Picture Board: So what I want to do is get pictures of everyone (our friends and family) contributing to the blog and put up a page so everyone can get to know everyone else. House: It has fallen through becuase of some repair issues that couldn't be worked out. We will start looking again soon, I hope.

Sommer: She's Huge!!!

Travis: He's Huge!!! I have to keep up with her. Did you know we actually order dessert now when we eat out! This is awesome. Too bad it's only for 9 months.

Ultrasound: We have one in 4 weeks. We get to find out the baby's sex then. Then we can start buying the appropriate items for the nursery, like a plasma TV.

Football Pool: Sommer should listen to me more. I knew there was no way the Saints were going to lose last night. We're not fighting, I'm just saying I knew.

I did fall out of the bed about 2:30am Wednesday morning. Thanks for telling everybody Sommer! There will be no further need for any family or people at Sommer's office to send me any more text messages asking me if I'm OK or if I need a seat belt for the bed or if I might be safer sleeping in a low laying cot. I did suffer an injury FYI and have a little bruise in my wrist where it hit the night stand next to the bed. I will recover.

SOoooo....since Sommer is in such a sharing mood I'd like to share a little information about Sommer.

The reason I fell out of bed is because Sommer has stolen all the pillows from the bed! She has no consideration for my comfort. She refers to her 5 pillows affectionately as "The Set-up" and as she arranges all the pillows into the necessary shaped pile for sleeping she says, "It's too bad you don't have this sweet set-up". If I get close to her at night she hits me with a pillow and calls me "Bed'Qaeda" or "Osama Bed Laden" and reminds me to stay on my section. Now, my "section" and my "side" are not the same. Most men get their "side" of the bed, implying an equal portion divided down the middle. I, on the other hand, get a "section". My section is not even of equal sizes at the top and the bottom. It's shaped more like a the blade of a knife. It is straight on the bed edge side and bowed in with a point at my feet and a point at my head, kinda like a crescent. My feet and head have to stay in the same space all night, but I have a slight bowing area for bending my back a little while I sleep. I didn't used to get the bowing section but Sommer said I didn't clean good enough when my back was stiff so she gave me the extra 17 degrees. The night I fell out of bed I was confused because Sommer had asked that I turn around and sleep with my head facing the foot board as she was "tired of listening to me breath." So at 2:30 in the morning I started to bow my back out so it wouldn't be sore in the morning for cooking Sommers breakfast, and as I was facing the other side of the bed when I bowed I dropped from the bed and crashed into the night stand. This woke Sommer up which made her very unhappy. Because of the noise and my fall, I had to spend the rest of the early morning (by Sommers orders) knitting little corner covers out of yarn to put on the corners of all things sharp.

What's Happening?!?

HOUSE - We signed our contract on Friday. We have our inspection next week. I think our closing date is Sept. 28th and we take possession Sept. 30th.

REMODEL - We are knocking out a wall and painting before we move in but the new counter tops and things will have to wait just a bit as it turns out when you buy a house they want you to actually pay for some part of it and stuff which reduces the amount of cash reserve available for counter tops. I don't believe this is true in England, but that's because they don't have such a backward system there. My understanding is that in England, if you see a house you like you just move into it and if the government likes you they give you some money every month to live there.

THANKSGIVING - We're booked, thanks to everyone that's coming. In fact we're pretty much booked the entire month of November. It's not too early to get your Christmas reservations in however. Rates at the new house start at $49.00/night plus pet deposit. That does include one meal a day. Let's hope you're there on the days I'm cooking (sorry Sommer).

GRAVE ILLNESS - Unless saying otherwise will get me out of any manual labor, I'm recovered.

BABY NAMES - We've got some winners picked. Sommer says we're not supposed to say what they are though until the baby comes. I'm going to leave that to a vote of the populace. Let me know what you want.

WEDDING BAND - I got mine yesterday. It's pretty nice. The chain doesn't quite match the ball but I got it on discount. I think we can shine it up a bit with one of those citrus oxy clean things.

A Break in the Action

Sorry we've had no posts in a few days. Luther Baby's daddy ended up in the hospital with viral meningitis. What's that? Click here... This is pretty much the worst medical issue I've had as it feels like my brain and spine are boiling. So there you go Evelyn, I hope you're happy for teasing me because I didn't know (at the time) that Thanksgiving was always on a Thursday. Does it feel good? Does it feel good to tease a man on his death bed? Of course I didn't know it was always on a Thursday. I HAD VIRAL MENINGITIS!!! John would have never teased me like that! He would have said "Travis is an intelligent man. Something must be wrong. I'm going to phone his doctor and suggest that Travis may have the meingitis as he is acting rather queer." That's because John is my boy! You go John!!

SPINAL TAP - What they do is take 3 needles, that get longer in size, and insert them into your back in increments, numbing tissue and going deeper until they reach the spinal cord (after rocking the last dagger off a number of vertebra). Then they suck out 3 tsp of spinal fluid. ITS KINDA LIKE BASTING A TURKEY ON THANKSGIVING WHICH IS ON A THURSDAY.

IN BABY NEWS - It is my understanding that Cindy Sheehan has set up just outside of President Bush's Crawford Ranch and is demanding the president release Luther Baby from jail. From what we've heard Luther Baby is being treated well and is looking forward to Luther Baby's day in court. This is however being relayed back to us through Luther Baby's attorney, Jim Leventhal, who although has absolutely no experience in fetal prisoner releases, is working this case rather well.

YACKY YACK YACK - I cant remember the last time Sommer actually got sick. She still feels sick but hasn't actually GOTTEN SICK in probably 10 days, which is great! Let's see...10 days. 10 days before Thanksgiving would be on a Monday as Thanksgiving ALWAYS FALLS ON A THURSDAY!!!!!! MENINGITIS EVELYN!!!!

Raising Bail

Sadly, Luther Baby was arrested today for trying to carry a number of liquids onto an airplane including baby formula, baby oil and Snapple.

At the time of his arrest, Luther Baby claimed to be unaware of the new travel restrictions but TSA officials working the gate say otherwise, claiming that Luther Baby was totally disrespectful of all security measures, even attempting to pass through security with SHOES ON while singing Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots were made for Walking."

Luther Baby's parents are shocked saying, "We didn’t even know Luther Baby could talk, let alone sing."

For others in the neighborhood Luther Baby's tirade came as little surprise. "Luther Baby's always out in the driveway yelling at people to keep their dogs off the lawn and such," reports one neighbor, "Luther Baby may have ADD." Another neighbor chimed in “You can’t be goin’ to the airport and then acting all Mel Gibson when a cop tries to stop you about your illegals. It just ain’t right.”

In response to your next question regarding the re-use of the pregnancy test: The answer is that as far as Lutherbaby.blogspot.com knows, only Catholics can re-use the pregnancy test as there will always be two lines because they are pregnant all the time.

Regarding the number of lines on the pregnancy test: One line means “No Baby”. On modern pregnancy tests this is referred to as the “Thank God” line. Two lines mean one to two babies; often termed the “Oh God” lines. The 3 line pregnancy test was banned in 1987 by the Food and Drug Administration (http://www.fda.gov) after a Consumer Report determined it to be high in Trans Fats and that it did not taste very good.

As of this response, the baby’s sex can not be determined through an initial pregnancy test, only that sex has been determined to cause the initial pregnancy.

10 Wendys Chicken Nuggets yesterday AND a Jr cheese burger deluxe! 10 Wendys Chicken Nuggets today. This has been Sommer's lunch for the past 2 days. She swears the chicken nuggets temporarily cure her nausea. I'm 6'3, 225 lbs -I can't eat that. I'm impressed honey. But have mercy on the chickens!

So as we were all walking out the door of the doctor's exam room (after hearing the news that Sommer was pregnant) I saw the pregnancy test by the garbage. Not that it's going to end up in a museum, but I thought it best I archive it for the blog. See...just like the doctor told us - 2 lines means pregnant! I've got it in a ziplock bag if anyone wants to pass it around like the Stanley Cup.

This has become the hardest thing to do. When Sommers up at night I'm up at night, and Sommer was up quite a bit last night. We spent yesterday afternoon BBQ'ing and fishing at Cherry Creek lake and last night wishing she hadn't eaten all those brats as they had her stomach upset all night! I hope her nausea goes away soon. Everyone's saying anytime now. Anyhow, I'm glad I'm my own boss or I would be getting yelled at quite a bit this week for coming in late.
